The Echo smart speaker has Alexa, as Apple has Siri and Microsoft has Cortana, and she is a pretty smart girl since Alexa can now read your books to you. Of course, she can only work with Kindle for now.
Who is Alexa, exactly, and what can she do?
Alexa is a smart bot, just like Cortana is for windows. She can be activated by voice, you just need to start your demand by uttering her name loud and clear, just like with Cortana, or Siri. The main difference is that Alexa is integrated into the speakers system, and not in a phone or tablet.
How helpful is she?
Alexa will come in handy for those who prefer to listen to a book being read by someone else, or those who cannot read by themselves. For the moment, her features have their limits, but we expect not for long.
Her present features allow the user to command her to read a book, continue reading from where she left off, pause, and go back or forward for a paragraph. Alexa’s voice is that of a female robot, so it may not sound like a mother reading bedtime stories, but she is close.
Even though you can’t flip through the chapters of a book, you may browse your library and ask Alexa to read you a specific book. She can either start reading from the beginning or start from where she stopped last time she had contact with the said book.
Alexa can now read your books to you almost as efficiently as a real person would. But she has an irresistible robotic, Steven Hawking voice.
How can I find Alexa?
The Alexa feature is available under the name of Kindle Books by Alexa and is free for purchase from Amazon Echo.
What else can Alexa do?
Although Alexa can now read your books to you, being connected to the internet, she could also answer questions that are not related to the number of the page she last read. The smart robot function can recommend you the latest books available for Kindle, tell you where you should eat, how the weather is going to be, and even crack a joke or two. The jokes could be funny, it depends on the user’s sense of humor.
Unfortunately, Alexa is not available for use for any other devices, she works only with the Echo smart speaker.
