Magalodon, Giant Shark Became Extinct About 2.6 Million Years Ago

October 25, 2014 By Cliff Jenkins Scott

Megalodon-became-Extinct-2.6-Million-Years-ago

Recently, a new study conducted by University of Florida researchers dismisses the claims that Megalodon is still alive by revealing that this 60-foot long shark became extinct about 2.6 million years ago.

The study counters other theories stating that Carcharocles Megalodon became wiped out much later along with some stating that the monster shark never extinct. Catalina Pimiento, lead author of the study said, “I was pinched to the study of Carcharocles Megalodon’s extinction because it is fundamental to know when species became extinct in order to be aware of the causes and consequences of such an event.”

“This study might also help other scientists to better understand the potential widespread effects of losing the planet’s top predators,” he added.

The study represented the first phase of Pimiento’s ongoing reconstruction of Megalodon’s extinction. Because of the current biodiversity crisis, the modern top predators, particularly large sharks are significantly declining worldwide. The study acts as a basis to better understand the consequences of these changes, Pimiento added.

“When you confiscate large sharks, then small sharks are very abundant and they consume more of the invertebrates that we humans eat. The findings of the study show that large-bodied, shallow-water species of sharks are at greatest risk among marine animals, and the overall risk of shark extinction is substantially higher than for most other vertebrates,” Pimiento said.

“When we started measuring the Megalodon’s time of extinction, we observed that the modern function and gigantic sizes of filter feeder whales became established at that time. Further investigation will be done in order to find out if Megalodon’s extinction played a part in the evolution of these new classes of whales,” he added.

It took almost 6 years to unravel the details of Megalodon’s extinction, including ongoing analysis of Megalodon’s body size, Pimiento said. The study reveals that Panama served as a nursery habitat for the species.

Jorge Velez-Juarbe, a paleontologist with the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County stated, “The study will not only serve as a key reference for exposing the myth that Megalodon still exists, but its new methods will influence the future of scientific research of extinct animals and plants.

Pimiento is further planning to inspect possible correlations between changes in the Megalodon’s distribution and the evolutionary trends of marine animals including whales and other sharks.

The study has been published in the recent issue of PLOS ONE journal.

NASA Reported; Siding Comet Safe After the Risky Encounter with MARS

October 21, 2014 By Cliff Jenkins Scott

nasa-reported-comet-encounted-with-mars

MAVEN, NASA’s mars spacecraft survived even after the dangerous encounter with the Red Planet.  The comet flew past the Red Planet comparatively ten times closer than any other previous comets.

Astronauts and People affiliated with space eagerly waited for the time at which comet flew past the Mars. It was indeed a once in a lifetime event; therefore, scientists tried to capture as many possible images as they can of this event.

Scientists specially placed three rovers in space for this purpose. They have assigned the particular task to Curiosity and Opportunity whereas the other rover gathered all the minor and major details related to the event.

The comet lovers will definitely search the internet to read the latest significant information. Undoubtedly, it will certainly consume a lot of time to analyze the entire data accumulated from this flyby of comet.

Fortunately, researchers revealed that NASA intends to release the images on the website till next week.

Earlier, scientists warned that this close encounter was extremely risky since it can damage the Siding comet. However, researchers took this risk just to get a closer look of Mars, although this mountain like heavy comet can hit the MAVEN.

Luckily, the spacecraft remains safe after passing the planet with a speed of 87,000 miles. This safe and sound encounter indeed took a lot of burden from the shoulders of scientists.

Scientist Staggers Upon Puppy-sized Spider

October 20, 2014 By Cliff Jenkins Scott

Puppy-sized-spider

Piotr Naskrecki, a wildlife photographer was taking a night walk in the Guyana’s rainforest and suddenly heard a rustling sound like something was creeping under his feet. Eventually, when he turned around with his flashlight on, he saw a puppy-sized animal rustling around.

My excitement uttered, when I found the creature turned out to be a Goliath spider. “When I turned on the flashlight, I couldn’t quite understand what I was seeing,” Naskrecki, from Harvard University’s Museum of Comparative Zoology, stated. Usually, the Goliath spider hunts at night, and feeds on small animals, including insects, frogs and earthworms. These spiders are also hard to find. “I’ve been working in the tropics in South America for almost the past 15 years, but I only saw the spider three times,” he added.

Goliath spider has massive sharp fangs, which could inflict deep wounds, though the venom of the Goliath bird eating spider isn’t deadly to humans. “I found that it was rubbing its hind legs against its abdomen- an action,” Naskrecki stated.

Report: Whale found dead in Australia

October 16, 2014 By Cliff Jenkins Scott

rare-breaked-whale-found-dead-on-australia

At Redhand Beach which is 93 miles north of Sydney, Australia, a rare beaked whale washed up on shore. This has scientists and researchers all abuzz as the creature is known to habitat the deep waters as far from humans as possible.

The cause of the whale’s death is unknown at present. It measured to about 13ft in length. Scientists are pouring all over the animal’s carcass to glean data regarding not only its death but its life as well. They’ll use a variety of testing technologies to get to the bottom of several mysteries surrounding this species of whale that is extremely rare.

Using everything from X-rays to DNA, the scientists will also examine the whale’s stomach and digestive system to see what it eats and did that have anything to do with the animal’s demise. These animals are so rare that this incident will give scientists a leap ahead in knowledge about them and other species.

All scientists know so far is that this species of whale is remarkable in that it is one of the deepest diving whales known.

Scientists can only imagine the animal’s eating and mating habits. Also does it get into fights with other sea denizens like the other whales and porpoises and dolphins do. How far do they travel and what are their relationships with their own species? Family structure etc.? These questions still remain elusive and what is gathered from this specimen will be used as a benchmark for any others found alive or dead.

Knowing what the animal eats and its optimum environment, should one be captured alive and need help then animal caretakers will have a better idea on how to tend to the animals.

Three Thousand Year Old Cult Structure Found In Israel

October 15, 2014 By Cliff Jenkins Scott

ancient-discovered-in-israel

A structure, estimated to be around 3,300 years old was unearthed in Israel and the data opens the doors to further examination.

The structure is believed to be a temple of sorts to a cult that worshiped the Canaanite god, Baal. Found among the artifacts are broken face masks, e conjoined cups, large jars and other items. Teh large jars contained smaller vessels that suggest they were used as offerings as they were found outside of the 52ft x 52ft excavated area. Not only that but the designs on the jars suggest they may have come from Cyprus thus adding to the mystery. What would Grecian artifacts be doing in that region and how much impact did that culture have?

There’s much more excavation that need be done considering the the magnitude of the find. The site is located at Tel Burna in Israel near the city of Kiryat Gat.

The project was announced during the annual European archaeologists gathering and director of the Tel Burna Excavation Porject, Itzhaq Shai gave out the details on the findings and future research.

The researchers can only go by speculation at this point. It’s like putting together a puzzle that is made up of pieces that one can’t see. It takes careful excavation, then cleaning of any objects, forensic science application, utilizing new and old tools to determine age and authenticity.

When the pieces come together the researchers then fine tune their estimates thus new evaluations and theories. Sooner or later the mystery will be solved and there may or may not be history changing events gleaned from this find.

Blame Game: Snapchat Diverted Responsibility of Stolen Pics to Third Party Apps

October 11, 2014 By Cliff Jenkins Scott

snapchat-nude-photo-leak

As per the recent reports, a slide of nude pictures started showing up on 4chan last night. These images were actually hitched from thousands of Snapchat users.

The event has been hailed as ‘The Snappening’, dubbed after the former nude hacked photo named ‘The Fappening’. About a month ago, some hackers got hacked some celebrities’ iCloud accounts, stole nude pictures from there and posted them on 4chan. One of the notable actresses among all was Jennifer Lawrence, who said that this is a ‘Sex Crime’.

Kenny Withers (social media consultant & writer) stated that, “Hackers stole pictures from 200,000 accounts.”

Snapchat has issued the following statement to VentureBeat in response, confirming that a hack has occurred. But Snapchat makes clear that its “servers were never violated”.

“We can validate that the Snapchat servers were never violated and were not possibly the source of these leaks. Probably Snapchatters were mistreated by their 3rd party apps, which they probably use to send and receive photos, a practice that we always prohibit in our Terms of Use, as they compromise on the customer’s security. We anxiously scrutinized the App Store and Google Play for illegitimate third-party apps and have succeeded in getting many of these removed.”

The images leaked on Thursday night might be saved from years, although there is some confusion about the source of the images. There are some reports stating that these images came from a 3rd party client SnapSave. Though, Business Insider reported that these images came from SnapSaved Website, which allow users to save their pictures online instead of mobile.

The statement of the Snapchat confirms that the hack has indeed occurred, but they pushed all responsibility to the user – which is something the victims of this hack aren’t likely to appreciate.

Indonesia’s Cave Paintings Rival Europe’s

October 9, 2014 By Cliff Jenkins Scott

indonesian-cave-art-paintings

In a surprising discovery, cave paintings found in Indonesia have been determined to be as old as their counterparts in Europe.

The estimated 40,000 year old stencils of hands and other art depicting animals were found in limestone caves on the island of Sulawesi. They’re about the same age as cave art discovered in Spain and southern France says the study published Wednesday in the journal Nature.

Lead author of the study, Adam Brumm points out that now we have 40,000 year old cave art in both Spain and Sulawesi. Brumm is a research fellow at Griffith University in Queensland, Australia. He also expects other cave art to be discovered and to be of similar age ranges, perhaps even earlier. It was in the 1950s that Dutch archaeologists first reported the cave art but the art had remained undated until recently. Previous researchers had assumed the art was produced during the pre-Neolithic period that took place around 10,000 years ago.

There were no preconceived ideas regarding the true age of the cave art when the researchers first started their project around three years go but using today’s dating technology they have been able to determine a more accurate age. They used a technological technique called U-series dating.

In order to determine the age of the paintings they searched the art that was covered by small cauliflower-like growths on them. When they found suitable samples of the “cave popcorn” as their called, they used the small traces of uranium in them which decays to a substance called thorium. This decay has a known rate of decay. Using this data they look at the ratio between the elements as it behaves as sort of a geological clock that dates the formation of the calcium carbonate deposits.

Using a diamond drill they bored into the cave popcorn and took small samples that also included pigment from the cave art. This layer of pigment should be as old as the first layer of mineral deposit that lay on top of it.

This allowed the researchers to determine the age of the cave art as around 40,000 years old.

The combination of cave art data give scientists an idea of when art arose amongst humans. Did humans discover art independently at different locations? Had humans developed art from even earlier cultures?

These and other questions are before the scientists now that they have the comparative data.
