Curiosity Strenghthing Memory – A Research Analysis

October 4, 2014 By Cliff Jenkins Scott

new-research-brain-curiosity

“Remain curious and keep learning” is the quote among few citations that one often come across in his news feed .A new research published in a neuroscience journal-Neuron this Thursday has actually proved this citation . The study was conducted by researchers from University of California at Davis, concluding that people learn more enthusiastically in a state of curiosity, and that spirit of inquiry fosters memory.

The findings published are a result of efforts by Charan Ranganath- a neuroscientist at UC Davis and his colleagues. The neuroscientist and his fellows interviewed a group of individuals who willing agreed to be a part of the database for the study. The volunteers were asked about certain trivia questions and were monitored for their brain functioning during the process of answering.

For imaging their brain activities functional MRI was used. The team noticed increased activity in the hippocampus during the state of curiosity, triggering brains reward system resulting in emotion of excitement and happiness. Hippocampus as one should recall is the part of brain that is responsible for integrating new memories, and consolidating them from short term to long term memories.

Furthermore, when participants’ were asked to recall their answers to questions a day later, they remember 71 percent responses to high-curiosity questions as compared to 54 percent of questions creating low curiosity at that time. They were also able to recollect the incidental happenings such facial expressions in their brain that they observed while they were in the condition of increased inquisitiveness.

The author Charan Ranganath told that curiosity recruits the reward system of the brain building interactions between the reward system and hippocampus leaving brain in a situation that forces it to retain the information and fosters learning even though the piece of information is of no use.

The team plans to do further study in order to evaluate the use of curiosity in school settings to promote learning or in senior centres to hold off age related memory loss.

Recent Captured Snaps of Rosetta Comet Proven Good for 3D Printing

October 4, 2014 By Cliff Jenkins Scott

release-images-of-Rosetta Comet

According to the reports revealed by BBC News, the ESA (European Space Agency) has out highly detailed pictures of the Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. The images are available at .wrl and .obj files from the ESA site. However, these high resolution pictures help people with a proper software and a 3D printer to formulate a physical model of the comet.

Moreover, the images also endow with the most accurate estimates of 67P’s genuine dimensions. The previous reports revealed that, the comet is about 4kms in diameter. But, now with the help of recent images, we can clearly see the dimensions equaling 2.5 km by 2.5 km by 2.0 km for the head, which is smaller of the comet’s two lobes, and 4.1 km by 3.2 km by 1.3 km for the body, the bigger lobe.

As per the reports of earlier studies, the mass of the comet equals to 10mn tons and having the density of 400kgs per cubic meter. The comet completes one rotation every 12.4043 hours and the comet’s surface temperature is between -68 C and -43 C, whereas the subsurface temperature is around -243 C and -113 C. Rosetta has spotted water, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, ammonia, methane, and methanol, all in gaseous form, on the comet.

More information concerning Comet 67P will possibly include its albido, which is the amount of light it reflects and getting more high-resolution pictures captured with the help of Rosetta OSIRIS camera.

Certainly, Rosetta appointed with the Comet 67P in August. And right now both are 464mn-kms from Earth. After that, the main occasion in Rosetta’s stopover, associating Comet 67P as it moves deeper into the solar system, will be the exploitation of the Philae lander. As per the official reports, Philae will detach from Rosetta on Nov 12th and stab to land on the comet’s head in a plan enduring around 7 hours.

Report: Foundations for upcoming Google ocean map has been laid by most recent Map of Ocean Seafloor

October 3, 2014 By Cliff Jenkins Scott

new-ocean-map-unexplored-mountains

The research findings included in Journal Science have turned into a hallmark discovery in earth sciences. It uncovers various minute details about the trenches and mountains which sink and rise beneath the waves. It also has a map of world seafloor which provides an efficient approach to the continents formation.

A scientific model having the ability to measure the gravity at ocean seafloor was used to make the new map. It used the data from ESA’s CryoSat-2 satellite which is responsible for examining polar ice and also works on the oceans 24/7. Moreover researchers took the data from NASA’s satellite, Jason-1, which was redirected to map the gravity field during the last year of its 12-year mission.

It showed various unprecedented features like new indication for spreading seafloor ridges at the Gulf of Mexico that were active before almost 150 million years but are now shrouded by mile-thick coating of sediments along with the newly visible connections between Africa and South America which gives the vibrant proof of how these continents are formed and are still changing today.

The author in the report writes:

“One of the most important uses of the new marine gravity field will be to improve the estimates of seafloor depth in the 80 percent of the oceans that remains uncharted or is buried beneath thick sediment”

Richard Francis, co-author of the new paper, in a news release stated that:
“Although CryoSat-2’s primary mission is the cryosphere, we knew as soon as we selected its orbit that it would be invaluable for marine geodesy, and this work proves the point.”

The findings will also be used for future research. In a nut shell, these findings provided the basic foundation for the upcoming new version of Google’s ocean maps in order to fill large gaps between shipboard depth profiles.

Approximately Half of the World’s Animals Vanished Since 1970

September 30, 2014 By Cliff Jenkins Scott

wild

The recent reports of WWF (World Wide Fund) revealed that almost half of the world’s animals vanished since 1970. The population of fish, birds, mammals, amphibians and reptiles drop down by 52% within 1970 to 2010.

Alternatively, the report of conservation group’s Living Planet, published every 2 years, stated that, the demands of human kinds are increased by 50%, which seems more than that the nature bears, trees felled, ground water pumped, CO2 emissions increased more than the Earth can bear (Reuters).

Ken Norris (Director of Science at the Zoological Society of London) stated, “This huge damage is not foreseeable, though the outcome of the way we choose to live.”

Moreover, the report stated that we can still tackle the situation if politicians and businesses took the right actions to save nature.

“It’s quite vital that we grab the opportunity in order to develop a sustainable future where people could live and thrive in harmony with nature. We can’t preserve the nature by only protecting wild places, though it’s also about conservation of the humanity’s future, indeed, our only way to survive,” International Director of WWF, General Marco Lambertini stated.

As per the reports finding of the populations of vertebrate wildlife, the major declines were in tropical regions, especially Latin America. WWF, which believes to be a “Living Planet Index”, is relying on the trends in 10,380 populations of 3,038 mammal, bird, reptile, and amphibian and fish species.

World Wide Fund told, the average 52% decline is much larger than the previously published reports, partially because these studies has based on more readily accessible information from Europe & North-America. According to the same report published 2 years back, stated the decline of 28% within 1970 to 2008.

Certainly, the worst decline was believed to be amongst the population of fresh water species, which equals to 76% till 2010. On the other hand, marine and terrestrial decline equals to 39%. The major reason for the decline in populations happened due to the loss of natural habitats, exploitation due to hunting and fishing and most importantly due to climate change.

To measure the variation between the statistics of various countries experimental impact, the report gauged that how large an ‘ecological footprint’ each one had and how much productive land and water area, or “bio-capacity”, each country reliable for.

Furthermore, the report revealed that Kuwaitis followed by Qatar and UAE had seems to be the largest ecological footprint so far, as they are consuming and wasting more resources as compared to any other nation. In addition, poorer countries such as India, Indonesia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo also had ecological footprint that seems fine with the planet’s ability to absorb their demands.

Jack Marshall wrote that Atlas, as the platform is famous among people, which guarantees to assist marketers recognize which Facebook users have seen, cooperated with or acted upon ads that become visible both on Face book’s services and on third-party websites and apps.

This new service also provides an automatic device recognized in the industry as a ‘demand-side platform’ or ‘bidder,’ which will suggest marketers the capability to purchase ads that target Face book’s users as they move around the web,” the Journal stated.

Tim Webster, head of strategy at Exchange Lab said Face book’s main challenge is to make its own place in the marketing world against to Google, which manages the market for serving display advertisements through a contributory called a double – click and now Facebook is going head to head with Google, but it is excellent for advertisers because there will be more options to place ads on web.

Bill Gross leaves Pimco the largest bond fund for the Janus Capital Group

September 27, 2014 By Cliff Jenkins Scott

U.S. Treasuries costs grew at its fastest pace that Pimco Chief Investment Officer Bill Gross leaving from the globe’s largest bond fund “Pimco” and he is joining the competitor Janus Capital Group, where he will handle the newly launched Janus Global Unconstrained Bond Fund and connected strategies.

According to the news that the Pimco Total Return Fund had 41 percent of its assets in U.S. government-related securities at the end of August, and analysts said brokers sold Treasuries to bet shareholders would drag cash from Pimco.

Italian and Spanish 10-year bond costs also fell after the declaration of Gross’ exit on fears that Pimco, which has huge assets in euro zone peripheral bonds, may change its plan.

Galoma said that the recent report of Gross’s exit is huge, and the implications are massive for bond markets around the world and any market that he is involved in will under perform.

Shareholders on Friday are showing a great eagerness to purchase dangerous treasures, such as stocks, following a quick sell off in these assets on Thursday and the Dow Jones Industrial Average in recent times was up 81 points, or 0.5%, at 17027.

Mr. Giddis said that the result he once had on a market is just not as well-liked as it was a couple of years ago and the selling previous Friday already has attracted some investors to purchase Treasury bonds, and that is why you are seeing bond costs bouncing off the low of the day.

He further said that if all funds departs from Pimco, it likely gets a home anywhere else and that has been going on all year.

Indian spice Turmeric enhanced the brain function

September 27, 2014 By Cliff Jenkins Scott

Curcumin-New-studies-support-brain-and-cardiovascular-benefits_strict_xxl

The most common Indian spice turmeric enhanced the brain function and experts found that the spice turmeric stimulated the development of neural stem cells in rats, though this is a long way from a successful trauma treatment for humans.

A latest report available in the journal Stem Cell Research & Technology converses what happened when specialists covered neural stem cells with turmeric in a Petri dish, the neural stem cells grew by 80 percent improved efficiency when compared to examinations of normal stem cells with no changing chemicals so this means turmeric can also beat dementia.

This test was held in a laboratory and scientist observed the neural stem cells results of the effect of a turmeric extract in rats. Numerous parts of the brain are home to these cells, which can convert into three special types of cells should the body call for it.

On the other hand, this study is in the initial stages and there are different issues to be thought when contemplating the possibility of any trials in humans, for example the increased rate of growth and differentiation of NSCs carries some risk of brain health but hopefully the possibility of risk will not effect on the human brain.

Neural stem cells have a little capability to redevelop brain cells after damage, although the researchers hope these conclusions may pave the way towards new healing methods for degenerative brain conditions, this is likely to be a long way off.

But the test shows the effective chemical found in turmeric extract so the hope is that by increasing the quantity of NSCs, they could be more helpful in repairing damage in these conditions.

PRGX EDITDA estimates $26 Million: More Caution Required

September 16, 2014 By Cliff Jenkins Scott

A bit of caution is advised regarding PRGX after a look into the first quarter. It’s due to the EBITDA estimates for this year as the company PRGX, might take some more time to overcome the challenges present in the first quarter. Estimates are now lowered for 2014 and 2015 adjusted EBITDA estimated by $1 million each to $26 million and $33 million thus presenting a $0.02 reduction of the 2014 and 2015 EPS estimates to $0.14 and $0.39. On the upside it is believed that PRGX is aggressively repurchasing shares. It would not be unlikely if the company completed their entire $20 million share repurchase authority this year. This just might be what’s needed to offset the effect on EPS from the EBITDA estimate reductions forecast.

There are three factors here that have to be addressed and overcome regarding the first quarter. The first being what the company disclosed that they’ll be changing from a first pass reviewer to a second pass reviewer with a certain client. That client is believed to be the same that company PRGX had a delivery issue with in the first quarter in the year 2013. This issue was reportedly due to technology failure that called for the company to reprocess its data. This technology issue brought about the concern regarding this change to second pass reviewer. It was in mid 2014 that the change to second pass reviewer and the revenue for PRGX might be similar but it depends on the timing lag of the second half of 2014. This is because PRGX will have to be patient for the first pass reviewer to get through claims in order to get a chance to work on the claims for that customer. So this means we’ll see the majority of the impact from this switch from first to second and so on in the second half of the year.

The second issue is the company had a large projecting in the works regarding commercial recover audit business in the second half of 2013 which created a problematic comparison to confront this year. The third issue the company’s citing pressure on its progression to the recover audit business more than it had done previously. The company’s management communication during its last conference call is a signpost that it recently had agreed to a price reduction of a large client which will be slowing of the business. It’s believed the company’s management guidance for 2014 that assumed EBITDA would flatten in the core recovery audit business also included the effect of these factors. All that being said, it appears a downside to all this than an upside to the target specified. It’s these factors that bring about the reason for caution to be applied.

Alibaba, Jeff Bezos, and Amazon China: Which Company is Most Valuable?

September 16, 2014 By Cliff Jenkins Scott

It appears Alibaba Group (Pending:BABA) will collect big money from its NYSE IPO, however it was Seattle’s Amazon that cashes in on the future of China’s $400 billion online shopping industry. It was Amazon’s (NASDAQ:AMZN) China connections ins business that seems to cover all facets. They have deliver, customer service, product quality, price comparison that is in competition with Alibaba’s Taobao business. This is all due to the actions of Jeff Bezos who has been shoring up his growing business throughout China and is establishing a stronger base than that of Alibaba’s boss, Jack Ma.

The mystery surrounding what Amazon’s China business sector is doing has people’s minds boggling. They are accused of putting too much investment in and not being as transparent as they should plus not showing as much a profit as expected. Amazon has invested tons in its China businesses and appears to be wanting to overtake Alibaba at some point. This has Amazon running like a submarine on a secret mission, running silent and running deep. This means investors, media, just about everyone affected by Amazon is wondering what is going on.

Not even in their communication to shareholders and others on their lines has Amazon alerted anyone as to what they’re doing in China. This may be cloak and dagger but it could mean something big, super big for Amazon to the point of a future of bounty. It could be that Amazon is working like some super secret project the likes of which haven’t been seen on the web. It could be that their Chinese operations will be the success of the galaxy.

Since Jeff Bezos has been a pioneer regarding online shopping the battle for supremacy began when Bezos’ first shop opened in 2004. Jack Ma’s opened a year earlier in 2003 and trounced eBay. Buyers and sellers couldn’t resist being able to buy and sell without having to pay a commission. Ebay died on the vine in China and Ma’s Alibaba took over growing from $170 million to $6 billion in fiscal 2013. With that kind of growth we’re looking at $1 trillion by the end of this decade.

Taobao is a madhouse of a company. Buyers and sellers have no security and just do as they please. Selling counterfeit goods, substandard goods without any fear of repercussion. No selling or buying fees and charging anything they want for shipping makes Taobao an online pirate’s dream. People fall victim to their own greed and lust for cheap goods and that keeps Taobao going strong. It will take Bezos to come up with something the Chinese culture doesn’t have and protects outsiders from fraud.
