Grand Theft Auto has never been a PG game. With all the murder, violence, drug use, sex, and pretty much anything fun that can replicate a psychopath’s life without making you feel guilty in real life present in the game, GTA has always been at the heart of one controversy or another. But a possibly soon to come mod to the latest installment of the series promises even more controversy, as VR GTA V might get a little too personal.
Murder simulator?
This is because the still in development mod uses hand tracking technology alongside virtual reality to make you feel like you’re actually part of the game, committing the series of murders and crimes by yourself, with you actually having to perform all the actions your character does.
In the gif uploaded to his website by Joseph Delgado, the modder in question, you can see him shooting a guy who stopped at a red light, chase him as gets out of his car and shoot him again, watch him fall down and get up, and eventually deliver the finishing gunshot as he laying down on the street.
Sure, most of us older, more experienced gamers might feel like there’s not much to it, but consider this – you’d be wearing a VR helmet, seeing the game as if you’re actually there, plus you’d have to physically make the shooting gestures in order to kill the random driver. Add to that the fact that you’d be seeing everything in the first person, and things could get uncomfortable.
Definitely not
Despite initially feeling guilty and horrible about how the killing felt, when he saw the positive reception his post on blog page received he committed to finishing the project. But it’s not going to be ready any time soon, as he still wants to come up with the best functionality for the driving mechanic.
Sure, with the setup he worked on – an Oculus Rift and a Razer Hydra – running, shooting, and whatnot are not that difficult to do, but driving is going to pose quite a challenge. Since Delgado really wants his mod to offer worldwide gamers a solid experience, he is working on an intuitive way to drive.
Eventually coming to the conclusion that the mod will be both disturbing and thrilling, Delgado went back to working on the mod that according to some sources is nothing more than a murder simulator. Being a fan of the franchise ever since its first installment, I can’t agree with that, but we’ll just have to see about this hyper-realistic mod.
