International Business Machine Will Shed Light on New 7 nano-meter Chip

July 12, 2015 By Denise Ehrlich

"International Business Machine Sheds Light on New 7nm Chip"

The new 7 nano-meter IBM chip will revolutionize the future

It was only recently made public that in the near future, Tech Corporation IBM or International Business Machine will shed light on new 7 nano-meter chip.

According to San Francisco reports, the latest development of the new computer chip is bound to open the path for a more successful and evolved society. Having a capacity almost four times bigger than the current products that now stand on the market, the manufactures of the 7 nano-meters chip, have revealed on the Thursday Efe news that, it is in fact ‘ 1000 times smaller than a red blood cell’.

Working alongside other various suppliers such as Samsung, SUNY (State University of New York), IBM is currently enjoying the benefits of this productive partnership, which in the end will be able to offer not only them, but the entire world, a new, improved computer chip that allows for faster transistor switching and a low level of power requirement.

Before this new development was implemented, when talking about computer components for example, the smallest chip up to date was that of Intel software. Being no bigger than 14 nano-meter, the Intel chips could only maintain a capacity of 1.9 billion transistors. Having the capacity of holding over 20 million transistors, the 7 nano-meter chip on the other hand, is able to reduce the computing power up to four times more than any other existing chip.

Following a trend known as the Moore Law, the main objective of IBM has always appeared to be that, of exponentially reducing the size of their transistors. Following the reputation of the first silicon chip developer and co-founder of Intel Gordon Moore, over the past years, it has become possible for every computer component to benefit from a higher number of transistors.

It has proven to be essential ‘for businesses and society to get the most out of tomorrow’s computers and devices, scaling to seven nm’, Arvin Krishna affirmed. Therefore, rather than using plain silicon, IBM announced that, in order for the newly created smaller components to function properly, the use of silicon germanium was highly praised.

By using new materials and manufacture techniques, IBM has released the chip of the future which, can be used to improve the way ‘of everything from smartphones to spacecraft’, the producers state. Being the first chip with transistors as big as 7 nano-meter that are even 10.000 times ticker than a human hair, by adding germanium into the mix, an increase in the electron mobility takes place, thus permitting a stable flow.

Although at the moment, the production of the 10 nano-meter is still captivating world-wide attention, it cannot yet be reveled when the 7 nano-meter will reach mass production. According to IBM and its close partners, making an investment of almost $3 billion dollars into a New York manufacturing factory is being planned and scheduled to take place in the near future, so that until the year 2017 all technological devices may benefit from the new invention.
