New Guidelines for the American Diet

January 17, 2016 By Carol Harper

"big salad for many people"

Americans should include more fresh vegetables in their diet plan.

The government of the United States issued new guidelines for the American diet. It seems that the official authorities take an interest in the dietary choices of their fellow Americans, and for this they have issued new guidelines for the American diet.

Sugar and Salt are the real enemies of the American people

The New Guidelines for the American diet are not that different from those that were released a couple of years ago. While warnings about high cholesterol and the risk of developing obesity and type two diabetes did not change very much, the new guidelines focus much more on the risks that sugar and salt may present.

Americans consume a double amount of added sugar than the daily recommended dose. This is due to the processed desserts and beverages. Only a medium cup of America’s favorite carbonated drink is enough to satisfy the daily recommended dose of sugar.

The same is applied to the consumption of salt. It appears that the levels of added salt intake are almost as high as those of sugar. Salt is added in most of the processed foods that are available on the American market. From pizza to pudding, Americans cannot avoid salt, but they could try to moderate it.

The dangers of not following the new guidelines for the American diet

Guidelines are there for exactly what their name suggests, to guide people in the right directions. The New guidelines for the American diet focus a lot on the high levels of salt and sugar intake. This is because the most common illnesses in the US are developed because of an overindulgence with these two ingredients.

From Heart Diseases to Glaucoma and Strokes

Salt is responsible for the increase in blood pressure, and hypertension is the basis of an incredibly big amount of serious health issues. An increased level of blood pressure could lead to heart failure due to cardiac arrest, it can also cause a blood vessel in the brain to burst because of the extra pressure that cannot be handled by the thin walls of the vessel. Hypertension can also increase ocular pressure which leads to the onset of open angle glaucoma.

Diabetes and Obesity

Sugar, spice and everything nice should be found in abundance only in cartoons. A high intake of processed sugars can put so much pressure on the liver that it may lose its ability to produce insulin. This leads to the onset of type two diabetes, an illness that affects millions of Americans in the present moment. Sugar also prompts fat accumulation which is the first step towards obesity, America’s number 1 health problem.

What should we eat?

There is no way to give up all of the foods that contain added sugar or salt, but you can moderate your consumption. The doctors advise the American people to eat more fruit instead of sweet treats, more vegetables with their meals and drink more water instead of carbonated drinks.

The conclusion is that the new guidelines for the American diet are not that oppressive and could be respected with just a little bit of effort from an educated population.
