The world is full of sad cases in which people simply can’t afford their treatments. So, they just to live with their afflictions for as long as they can, since they can’t really see a way out of it. But occasionally, either through a lucky break or a good natured act of help, or even both, someone does get that second chance they deserve. Luckily for the young woman and her family, Peruvian doctors remove 35 pound tumor from 22 year old.
The lucky break
Irianita Rojas Rasma is a 22 year old woman living in a remote area of the Peruvian jungle. Originally born in Peru’s capital, Lima, Irianita had the ovarian tumor since she was 13 years old. Over the years, not affording life in the capital, she moved with her family to the jungle.
As she decided to live with her condition for as long as she could, Irianita’s tumor eventually grew so big that it made her look like she was pregnant. It was about 19.6 inches in diameter – 50 centimeters – and it was double the size a baby would have.
One fateful day, Rosita was walking through her village, when she stumbled upon none other than Peru’s health minister. It turns out that he was there to oversee the construction of a new health center. She immediately caught the health minister’s attention, and Anibal Velasquez Valdivia immediately sent her to the hospital to get surgery.
After performing all the necessary tests to assure that Irianita wasn’t suffering from anything else that could impede the surgery, it took a team of surgeons somewhere around three hours to remove the malignant tumor.
This was happening on February 20th, and Irianita spent a few more days in the hospital to have her condition monitored. Once she returns, she will continue the necessary treatments back in her village, all supported by the health minister.
Luckily for the young woman, despite the tumor being malignant – another term for cancerous – it was also considered low intensity. That means that she will not need any chemotherapy treatments. This is because most patients suffering from this sort of tumor recover fully once it is removed.
The doctors used this opportunity to talk about the importance of regular gynecologist visits. Regardless of how uncomfortable they make you feel, going regularly to the doctor for a check-up can literally be the difference between life and death.
Despite the fact that the tumor wasn’t benign, the doctors are sure that Irianita will make a full recovery. She will continue her treatment in her village, and eventually at the health center that was being raised when she was noticed by Valvidia.
