Twisting and dunking have pretty much become synonymous with the Oreo cookies over the years. Pretty much all the brand’s ads instruct them to eat their product that way.
But now, the company is launching Oreo Thins, a much slimmer cookie, with fewer calories, aimed at adults in particular. The brand is throwing around the word “sophisticated” as a way of describing the product. What this means is that the new line of cookies are not designed to be twisted and dunked.
However, Janda Lukin, Oreo senior director, gave a statement saying that “But if people want to do that, it’s clearly up to them”. The senior director went on to make a comparison and informed that if classic Oreos are waffles, then the thin Oreos are crepes. She says that this is precisely what makes them more adult.
Calorie wise, Mondelez International Inc, the North America parent company for the Oreo cookies, has shared that the new product line was not designed as a dieting treat.
The Oreo Thins have a cookie-to-filling ratio that’s very similar to that of the classic Oreos, they’re simply skinnier (7.5 millimeters thick to be exact). They’re still crispy, and while four (4) classic Oreo cookies add up to 160 calories, four (4) of the new, thinner cookies only add up to 140 calories.
Oreo Thins are set to hit US shelves next week, on Monday, July 13, 2015 and sell for $4.95. The Today Show has already tried the new cookie and said that they are good and taste just like classic Oreos.
Although Rebekah Lowin said that the new cookies having even less creamy filling than the classic cookies is “straight-up sacrilege”, she also points out that the product “manage to retain a familiar crunch”, as well as a familiar creaminess.
The Oreo Thins were initially tested on the Chinese market as the company was experiencing some sale losses in the country. The new cookies have now managed to bring the brand back into the attention of the customers.
Young women in particular have responded well to the new products as they were looking for something that was less rich.
The Oreo Thins will be launched across the planet in the upcoming months.
