Presently, these scrolls are conserved in a library which belonged to the father-in-law of Julius Caesar. They are certainly a big mystery for the researchers since 79 A.D. The matter of thousands of papyrus scrolls were converted into useless charcoal due to the outburst of Mount Vesuvius. The eruption is considered as one of the great natural disaster of antiquity. .
Around 1,800 precious and fragile scrolls were uncovered in the 1750s. Researchers were able to read only a few of them. The black charcoal ink and the carbonized papyrus make it extremely difficult to interpret the content of the scrolls.
Scientists have applied numerous techniques to decipher the scrolls but in vain. Sadly, the majority of the techniques have the damaged the scroll to a large extent.
Recently, a group of experts used a new technology in order to decipher the text of the scrolls. The technology, which is known as X-Ray Phase Contrast Tomography, is pretty similar to CT scan.
Emmanuel Brun, researcher at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility in Grenoble talked about the nature of scrolls. He informs that the scrolls are very delicate as they are merely the pieces of charcoal.
