In the era of likes and selfies, we want people not only to notice but also to remember our photos and now an algorithm tells us how memorable a photo is.
We use cameras to make memories, but with the possibilities social media is offering us, it seems like we’re not making memories for us only, but also for our family and friends and distant relatives or people we never actually saw in real life. We post our memories online and we expect them to give us likes and comment on them and even remember them in time. When someone remembers one of your photos, they either really love you, or that photo was really worth remembering.
How the algorithm works
But how can you know? How do you manage to take a photo that’s worth remembering? The MIT has come up with an algorithm that could help you. This algorithm is a prediction tool similar to the ones that allow search features to automatically complete your phrases. For example, Google seems to know what you’re looking for before you finish typing and Facebook knows who you’re planning to tag in a photo.
The efficiency of the algorithm was tested by comparing it to the human mind. More exactly, they asked 5,000 people to look at a series of images and see which ones they remember, given that they were allowed to look at them for only 0.6 seconds. It turned out that the algorithm chose as memorable the same pictures that the people remembered. However, scientists can’t explain yet how exactly the algorithm does the job.
What makes a picture memorable
According to some other studies, there are indeed certain features that seem to make some photos more memorable than others. For example, people have a higher impact than landscapes and negative emotions tend to be easier to remember than positive ones. The team that came up with the algorithm studied the popularity of images on Flickr, where the most popular appeared to be the ones displaying bikinis or revolvers while the least interesting ones were pictures of spatulas or laptops.
The future of advertising
Although the algorithm will definitely be very helpful to people who are passionate about photos and want to make sure their photos are remembered, it will probably help companies even more. Advertising a product or a service will become a bit easier, as companies will know for sure what image is memorable enough to ensure the success of what they’re selling.
