A phone scammer, who managed to swindle $1,000 in the past couple of weeks, had quite the shock of his life when he got cornered by a police officer. The cop in question told the press that the suspect quickly hung up the phone when he realized who’s he talking to.
Phone Scammer Said He’s with the Ed McMahon Show
Jeff Bowling, a Pebble Police Department officer, recalls how a phone scammer tried to trick him into disclosing personal info.
By coincidence, Officer Bowling was working that case when he received a mysterious phone call. The man on the other end of the line, calling on behalf of Publisher’s Clearing House, congratulated him on winning.
He also informed Office Bowling that a brand-new Mercedes Benz and a $950,000 cheque are waiting for him.
The police officer asked the phone scammer if he’s aware of the fact that Ed McMahon, the host of the show, was dead for almost a decade.
He calmly replied that he knew about McMahon and calmly asked for an ID or driver’s license. Office Bowling asked him if his police ID would do.
The phone scammer seemed surprised that his victim was a cop but continued his line of inquiry.
Conclusion
Before hanging up the phone, he asked Bowling when he’ll be home. Jestingly, the Pebble law enforcement agent replied that he’d got nothing better to do than to sit in the station, working the case.
Although Bowling was mildly amused by the phone encounter, he declared that the individual already conned several people over the past couple of weeks.
The officer warned the resident about the phone scammers, asking them not to disclose personal info. As for the perpetrator, according to Bowling, he usually sticks with the same MO – calling on behalf of Ed McMahon’s show to offer expensive vehicles and money.
