Restaurant Meals Have More Calories Than You Wish For

January 20, 2016 By Denise Ehrlich

"restaurant meal with many dishes"

Researchers discovered that an usual restaurant meal has enough calories for a day’s worth.

More and more people are trying to eat healthy, but latest study shows that restaurant meals have more calories than you wish for, and the study focused on restaurants that serve anything but fast-food. It appears that eating healthy in America is a mission impossible.

92 percent of meals met the caloric requirements of a whole day

The latest study on the matter analyzed 364 restaurant meals and came to the conclusion that 92 percent out of them met the caloric requirements of a whole day. The restaurants that were chosen were both chain restaurants and local enterprises. Only 8 percent out of the total 364 meals were adequate for consumption from the caloric point of view.

Restaurant Meals Have more Calories than You Wish for

The team that conducted the study found that in the majority of the cases a single serving, without taking into consideration the appetizers, dessert and beverages contained more than enough calories to satisfy the daily recommend dose of an adult.

Because of the sizes, the dishes sometimes had the same calories as fast-food meals

It seems that, while the food was of a far better quality than that of fast-food, the meals were incorrectly proportioned leading to a massive over consumption. And while people can stop eating whenever they want and take home a doggy bag if the meal seems too large for one sitting, the case is not usually so because the food is good and the average American doesn’t know how to count the calories intake or isn’t informed enough to know how many calories are enough for a day.

Chinese, American and Italian food have the highest calorie levels

The study conducted at the University of Tufts HNRCA Friedman Nutrition Policy and Science School focused on the amount of calories present in popular restaurant meals and then analyzed them in various local or chain restaurants in three separate cities, San Francisco, Boston and Little Rock. The data was collected from 2011 to 2014.

The dishes that were submitted for analysis varied from typical American food to Indian, Greek, Japanese, Italian, Vietnamese and Thai. Apparently the Chinese, American and Italian dishes contained more calories than all the others.

There should be another Tom Cruise movie, but this time, his character should be faced with the mission of finding a restaurant where Americans can eat a healthy balanced meal because apparently restaurant meals have more calories than you wish for.
