Study Says, Risks Of Taking Aspirin For Cardiovascular Health May Surpass Its Benefits

January 14, 2015 By Cliff Jenkins Scott

A recent study inspecting the potential advantages of aspirin for heart attack patients has uncovered that most people do themselves more harm than good by taking the medication – and that the dangers exceed the benefit for some patients with cardiovascular conditions.

Utilizing aspirin to treat heart attack is not required by around 10% of those it is recommended for, and it gets to be counter-beneficial for these fraction of people as against the remaining 90% who could benefit from the medication.

“Aspirin is not a drug that comes without dangers,” said lead analyst Dr. Riva Hira, a cardiologist with Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX.

For heart attack patients that take aspirin unnecessarily, they could wind up encountering gastrointestinal bleeding and hemorrhagic stroke as a potential cause for the medication, and these symptoms can be deadlier than thought.

Dr. Francisco Lopez-Jiminez of the Mayo Clinic expressed that “The most vital message is to perceive that there are individuals (who take) aspirin thinking that they are shielding themselves from having heart attacks when they are really presenting themselves to the (bleeding) dangers of taking aspirin and likely having no advantage whatsoever.”

Furthermore a cardiologist, Ravi Dave clarifies that “You can have danger of bleeding in your stomach. You can even have a stroke that can result in bleeding inside your brain.”

Around 68,000 patients were included in the study, and the specialists urged specialists to utilize the calculator tool recommended by the American Heart Association for deciding the suitability of any specific patient for aspirin use. A portion of the issues that could be determined with the utilization of this standard calculator are the age, race, sex, HDL cholesterol, total cholesterol, diabetes status, blood pressure-lowering medications in use, and smoking status of each patient before aspirin is prescribed for them .

Dr. Hira exhorted that “Your specialist needs to evaluate not just your risk of cardiovascular disease, but also your risk of bleeding.”

The study uncovered that 17% of women take aspirin when they truly should not to, as contrasted with 5% of men who likewise do. Though, specialists inform that the convenience concerning popping a pill ought not to trump the need to appropriately look after your own health.

Aspirin misused in U.S.

January 13, 2015 By Marlene R. Litten

A recent study shows that many Americans are simply misusing the drug aspirin in order to avoid risk of heart attacks or strokes.

The research was conducted by the Journal of the American College of Cardiology and found that more than 1 out of 10 users in America misuse the drug, which can account for many side-effects.

The notion that the usage of low doses of aspirin can reduce a person’s chance of getting a heart attack or a stroke has become quite common in today’s day and age, but what most people fail to understand is that this is only valid for those individuals who have had previously suffered from either of the above situations.

Dr. Ravi Hira, the lead researcher and a cardiologist at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, said, ”This is not one of those drugs that doesn’t present side-effects or risks.”

The drug has side-effects that can lead to gastrointestinal bleeding and hemorrhagic strokes.

Dr. Valentin Fuster, a renowned cardiologist and professor of medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City, said that when using Aspirin “often, the risk of bleeding is higher than the risk of heart attack or stroke.”

This is alarming as the research suggests that out of the 69,000 U.S. adults prescribed Aspirin long-term, about 12 percent of these individuals have been misusing it, and therefore should never have been prescribed.

Study Proves: Mostly Doctors Prescribe Unnecessary Aspirin to Patients

January 13, 2015 By June Harris

aspirin and heart attack

A latest research proposes that aspirin that side effects of aspirin are greater as compared to its benefits.

Aspirin is a popular drug among heart patients. It controls the abnormal heartbeat of the patients. Additionally, it prevents the formation of blood clot in the arteries. Blood clot is one of the major causes of heart strokes and heart attacks. Hence, aspirin should be given to the people who have a blood clot issue.

Generally, doctors prescribe it to patients who suffered from ischemic stroke or heart attack.  A latest report of American Heart Association, aspirin would be recommended to at least 6 percent to 10 percent heart stroke in the next ten years.

However, a group of researchers of Baylor College of Medicine found that U.S cardiologists recommend aspirin to 68,808. However, 7,972 of these patients are taking it unnecessarily as they are at a very low risk of heart strokes. In short, around 11.6 percent patients are taking excessive aspirin drugs.

Moreover, the study reveals that aspirin would not lessen the risk of heart strokes of a healthy human.  In people who are at a low risk, aspirin can give birth to several other health related issues.

Dr. Ravi Dave, a cardiologist at UCLA Medical Center informs that aspirin can increase the hazards of bleeding in stomach.

The study is published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.
