Death Surviving Genes

June 24, 2016 By Marlene R. Litten

mRNA vizualization surviving genes

Scientists use special visualization techniques to identify active mRNA and surviving genes.

Scientists from the University of Washington discovered death surviving genes that remain active even after the physical shutdown of the organism.

Hundreds of genes were still found to be functioning despite the lack of brain activity, breathing and heart beating in the body.

The study involved zebrafish and mice. The researchers measured the presence of messenger RNA, which is used by cells to produce proteins. The monitoring took place four days after the animal’s death.

The After-Death Genetics

In the livers and brain samples taken from the small animals, the general mRNA levels would continuously decrease. What came as a surprise was the fact that the mRNA linked to 515 mouse genes and 548 zebrafish genes revealed peaks of activity. In order to function, the genes would have needed sufficient energy and activity support from cells.

While other genetic materials appeared to decay, the series of 1,036 genes seemed to be even more active in the three days following death. Moreover, in comparison with the rest of the genes in the organism, their activity was not chaotic.

The Role of Surviving Genes

The surviving genes were involved in processes like stress regulation, immunity, or inflammation. Another interesting fact is the return to activity of a gene that is usually connected with the life of the fetus, and it turns off after birth.

The positive functions revealed by the existence of these genes may indicate the organism’s effort to heal itself. However, scientists believe that the opposite scenario may be also plausible: the activity of the genes is a sign that the organism is undergoing full shutdown.

Supporting this idea is the fact that another kind of gene that became active was one commonly associated with cancer.

As many people that have liver transplants experience a type of cancer, the scientists believe that the activity of these genes is responsible for risks to the health of humans that receive the transplants.

Researchers point out that people who receive transplants have to take special medication that suppresses the immune system and thus makes them more vulnerable to cancer. However, the importance of cancer gene activation in an organ after death must be further analyzed.

Forensics also benefit from this discovery. The presence of activity in these surviving genes will be used to obtain a more precise indication of the time of death.

The results of the research show that the current concept of death may need to be revised, as the scientists wonder if mRNA activity could demonstrate that the organism is still struggling to regain balance.

Strange Increase In Death Rate of Seabirds Observed Near Pacific Coast

January 7, 2015 By Andreas Petersen

death of seabirds

Recently, a large number of seabirds died mysteriously near the Pacific cost. The death rate of sea birds compels researchers to determine the cause of them.

The biologists at Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife are striving really hard to find out the reason of common murres’s death.  Thousands of birds found dead on the beaches in last three weeks.

Generally, sea birds die in winter season and extreme storm weather. However, this year the rate of deaths of sea birds are pretty unusual.

Phillip Johnson, executive director of Oregon Shores Conservation Coalition states that this kind of death rates of sea birds occurred first time in the history.

The recent research of Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODWF) demonstrates that lack of food and exhaustion are the chief factors of the death. The severe weather conditions give birth to heavy winds which are really harmful for this specie. However, scientists are unable to find the cause that of shortage of food.

Herman Biederbeck, a biologist at ODFW informs that the majority of the birds died due to hunger and storms.

In comparison, a few researchers propose that the strange emergence of the young seabirds is responsible for the die off of older sea birds. The presence of thousands seabirds in a sea compels them to fight with each other on food.

Hence, the U.S Geological Survey’s National Wildlife Health Center has planned to carry out more necropsies on the dead birds.

Deadly Flu Epidemic Killed Three Children in Minnesota

December 30, 2014 By Andreas Petersen

Flu strain in US

The virulent Flu strain has killed three children in Minnesota, whereas seven children are admitted in the ICU of St. Paul hospital. The U.S Health officials declare three deaths from the flu strain H3.

Two months ago, the U.S Center of Disease Control and Prevention has already warned people regarding the dangerous forthcoming flu season.  Earlier, the government health agency predicted that the current flu vaccine would not be able to battle with this fatal disease. Sadly, all the apprehensions of CDC turned out true.

It appears like children are the most favorite target of this flu strain. Initially, it attacks young children without any major symptoms or health issues. Afterwards, it silently grows inside the body and emerges at a very uncontrollable condition.

According to the official reports of the Health department of Minnesota, around 50 percent of the students were unable to attend schools due to the illness.

Patsy Stinchfield, Director of Infection Prevention and Control inform that currently seven children are under treatment in the intensive care unit because of this flu virus. There are chances that this flu strain would mark a new history in number of cases till the end of December.

The H3 flu strain enters into the blood and instantly infects the functions of brain. Such kind of symptoms can lead to death if not treated properly on time. Additionally, it possesses the power to pack the chest of children with white blood cells that make it difficult for the immune system to fight.
