Newborn Missouri Baby Surprised the World with two front teeth

January 7, 2015 By Cliff Jenkins Scott

A newly born baby in Missouri just surprised the doctors with her two front teeth. The baby was born three days after the Christmas and the day was a surprise for her parents as she already had two front teeth.

Jaklina Bailey, the mother, told ABC7 that “Right when she first arrived, everybody was just shocked. Just like, ‘She has two front teeth? No kidding? Really?’ It was just a big talk about it, you know, in the delivery room.”

She told Fox News that even her doctor was shocked. “She said in her 25-year career this is the second time she’s ever seen it,” Bailey said.

According to the National Institute of Health, It’s likely that in about every 2000 to 3000 births, a baby is born with teeth.

Dr. Laura Corio, a clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, explained to ABC News that “Teeth can be present in oral cavities at birth and may be related to certain other health problems but not always,”

Corio told ABC News that in most of the cases the doctors shave down or remove the natal teeth quickly to prevent the baby from cutting its tongue.

Fox news reported that Baby Alyssa Bella Bailey’s teeth are not posing any health issues to her, although natal teeth can be associated to medical conditions such as cleft palates or hormone deficiencies.

The parents had decided to keep teeth in baby’s mouth. They planned to keep a close eye on the teeth just in case they become a safety hazard or dangerous for the baby, ABC reported. The natal teeth are an extra (third) set of teeth, so once they fall out they will be replaced with her baby teeth like other babies.

Flu epidemic hits US and claiming young lives

December 30, 2014 By Cliff Jenkins Scott

Flu-epidemic-hits-US-young-lives

CDC says that US has hit a flu epidemic threshold and already claimed the life of 15 children.

US Federal public health agency, Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that the death of 122 people from pneumonia and influenza has surpassed the baseline and now stands at the epidemic threshold.

Number of states reporting high flu activity have also increased from 13 to 22.

The reason behind the explosion of the disease is due to the mutation of the virus named H3N2 so eventually the effectiveness of the vaccines has reduced.

CDC has reported that the effectiveness of the vaccine was recorded to be 55 percent last year which has certainly reduced because of the mutation of H3N2.

Some cases of H1N1 and two types of Influenza B are also reported. Some are included in the current flu vaccines and some are not. CDC recommends people to get vaccinated so that it will protect people from the flu that out there.

CDC said in a statement “A total of 15 influenza-associated deaths have been reported during the 2014-2015 season from nine states (Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Minnesota, North Carolina, Nevada, Ohio, Texas, and Virginia,”

About half the children sick enough to be hospitalized had been perfectly healthy. Many of those with so-called underlying conditions were obese or had asthma, both of which can raise the risk that someone will get seriously ill from flu.

Generally flu hits people of very young and very old age. Yearly it kills 4000 to 50000 people a year depending on the season.

The best way to protect ourselves from flu is to wash our hands frequently. Flu is actually transmitted by close contact with someone, coughing, sneezing or touching the droplets and touching nose, eyes or mouth with it.

Report Says: Humpback Whales Stay Isolated for 70,000 Years

December 4, 2014 By Denise Ehrlich

Whales

A team of researchers discovered that the humpback whales, which generally live in the Arabian Sea are the most isolated whale population of the Earth

Generally, whales such as baleen whales are famous for their long distance migration. Every year, whales migrate from their cold water feeding grounds to the warm-water breeding grounds.  They move around in the form of pods and groups in migration.

Therefore, it is definitely very groundbreaking discovery for the researchers.  The recent study reveals that this whale population stayed secluded from even inter-breeding for around 10,000 years.  According to the recent study, the whales of Arabian Sea remained isolated from other whales for a long time period of around 70,000 years.

Tim Collins, the co-author of the study stated that the regular migrations of humpbacks are pretty impressive. However, this small non-migratory group of humpbacks gives birth to several unanswered questions regarding their origination and behaviors in the minds of researchers.  It is like a new big mystery for researchers.

Earlier, experts researched a lot on the history of humpback whales present in the Northern Hemisphere. The studies offered a large amount of significant information related to these whales.  Sadly, no one paid attention on the sea mammals of the Arabian Sea.

Researchers of a few organizations such as Wildlife Conservation society, the American Museum of Natural History, the Environment Society of Oman joined together for this particular research.

Later on, they published this report in 3rd December’s edition of Journal PlOS ONE.

Bats Release Special Signals to Catch the Prey – Report Says

November 7, 2014 By Carol Harper

bats emit sound to disrupt others

A recent study unveiled that the Mexican free tail bats produce a special ultrasonic calls which block the echolocation of other bats.

Researches named these sounds as “the feeding buzz”.  This is the first time in the history when scientists observed this kind of behavior in any specie.

Generally, bats fly down in darkness in order to hunt a prey. They usually release a high pitch sound that increases as they get near to their target. The entire process is known as echolocation. This particular ability is essential for them to search the food. However, this new report reveals that one bat can effortlessly take others prey through this sound.

Aoran Corcoran, the main author of the report was examining moths when he came across the bat calls.  He informed that one bat was struggling to catch its prey through echolocation. On the other hand, the second bat was continuously making sounds to disturb the echolocation of the first one.

Moreover, Corcoran notified that whenever a bat makes such kind of sounds the other bat would miss its prey.

Corcoran recorded the movement and sounds of bats with the help of camera. He placed several cameras in different parking lots and several other places.

The study printed in the 6th November edition of Journal Science

Rosetta Released The Mystery Of The Dark Side Of Comet 67P: Report

October 4, 2014 By Capital Berg Team

rosetta-Comet 67P-mystery

The world has gotten a better look at Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko thanks to the European Space Agency’s Rosetta Probe.

The ESA is working on the precise dimensions of the comet which will take more time to gather. More data will be gathered as the comet gets closer to our Sun. In addition the ESA delivered a new OSIRIS shape model of 67P/C-G in .wrl and .obj formats to get other people to print their own 3D version of the comet.

The model will be incomplete however because the dark side of the comet still hasn’t been imaged completely. Around 30% of the comet remains unknown and scientists have to use their best guesses. The comet is 465 million kilometers from Earth.

The big fun begins on November 12 when the ESA is going to try to land its Philae craft onto the surface of the comet. This would put the icing on the cake of this 10 year mission.

Landing a probe onto a moving comet is some fine engineering and execution of the sciences involving space flight and more.

The comet’s other news is that it is spouting jets of water vapor. Scientists can’t figure out the exact location of the jets. From only about 16.3 miles, the spacecraft took the pictures. The gasses appear to be coming from within the comet the product of ice sublimating and escaping. The jets do appear to be centered in one location around the middle of the comet. Scientists theorize that the comet having traveled around the Sun many times may have lost far more ice than is being observed this time.

As will all comets that orbit closely to the Sun, this comet will produce more activity as it gets heated up and facing solar winds.

This is one of the fun space missions of the modern era. The reason being is that it has been somewhat open source and has taken 10 years to go through. Imaging the comet allows for fun in the way the ESA has just released 3D versions that should entertain the children and future scientists.

Even families and schools, science clubs, can enjoy following this mission and with the landing of the Rosetta onto the asteroid the adventure really looks like it’s going to be grand.
