‘Unravel’ Will Be Tugging On Your Heartstrings In February

December 15, 2015 By Marlene R. Litten

"unravel game launch"

The highly-anticipated indie game ‘Unravel’ will be tugging on your heartstrings in February, as the cute physics-based puzzle game gets an official launch date. Adorned with beautiful visuals, an adorable protagonist, and what looks like touching story, the tiny little Yarny will be teaching us a lesson about love.

‘Unravel’ was first presented at E3 by publisher Electronic Arts (EA) and independent studio Coldwood. It presented with stunning graphics, and gameplay that looks potentially simple compared to today’s usual releases, but it might also require some cleverness. The hero, Yarny, will be travelling across the spectacular sights of northern Sweden, unfolding the story before his entire string unravels.

He will encounter obstacles, and gather memories along his way, building a “heartfelt story about love and longing, and the ties that bind”, according to the creative director from Coldwood, Martin Sahlin. It’s in his hope that the beautiful little indie game will “tug on your heart strings”, and inspire.

The companies also released a new story trailer that hints at the soulful, and possibly bittersweet tale of Yarny.

‘Unravel’ will officially launch on February 9th for $19.99, but EA Access members will have the chance to play through the touching storyline earlier. According to the companies, they will also have a 10% discount for the Xbox One version of the indie game. ‘Unravel’ will be released on all platforms, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and the PC at the same time.

According to Sahlin, some challenges will be simple. Yarny will be using his red little string to pull himself over gaps or rappel down trees. However, others will call for the player’s creativity and cleverness to move forward with the cute hero. His quest is to “mend broken bonds” though it was left a mystery as to what that means.

All that we know is that the red string “represents the love and connection between people”, which could mean a long lost love, distance between lovers or family, or loss. It seems like the stunning visuals will just be a vessel to send a more powerful message. As you enjoy your adventure, Yarny will discover the world outside his home, in search to heal a broken or saddened heart.

Sahlin stated that his goal with the highly-anticipated indie title was to underline how unique of a medium games truly are. They have a power like no other, to make players see and experience a story for themselves. They entertain, but they also have the ability of moving us in a way that few art forms can. It’s about immersing ourselves into another world and a touching tale.

‘Unravel’ is about adding that personal touch to gaming. And, possibly, will not allow you to end the game with a dry eye.
