As much as TV-series fans complain about waiting too long for their favorite TV-show, the same happens with gamers who are anxious to see and play the latest, updated version of their favorite game. So, gamers everywhere, get ready to find out why we are always waiting so long for a new game to be released. Take-Two, Rockstar’s parent company, talked about why GTA keeps us waiting.
Apparently, it all comes down to marketing and profits. CEO Strauss Zelnick claims that if they would release the games annually, this would “burn off” their intellectual property and could reduce the demand as well as the quality which means the events won’t be labeled as “massive consumer events” anymore, which, of course, affects the image of both the company and the said game.
Therefore, their strategy is to create anticipation by leaving their customers on cliff-hangers, which obviously leads to higher demands as gamers become thirsty to get their new long-awaited game. However, the long wait is not only about marketing but also about the quality of the product. So, you could expect that the longer you wait the better will the game be. As Zelnick says, high quality cannot be always accomplished in less than a year, let alone annually.
Since they are clearly not going to release a new game every year, they are trying to release one title that will help support the other franchises and release another title the next year. In this way, they can still have a great profit without having to annually put everything on the market.
Although this does seem like a good idea, there are games such as Assassin’s Creed or Call of Duty, that are annualized, being released once a year. So not keeping up with this trend might still cause problems to Take-Two and their games. Despite the fact that creating anticipation could be good for business, there are some gamers who simply might get tired of waiting and pass on to other games that don’t keep them waiting as much.
However, for the passionate gamers who won’t give up on GTA, until the next release you can experience Grand Theft Auto V on a wide range of devices from PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 to PlayStation 4, Xbox One and of course your PC.
